About Us
Our History
The Design Spun Mill originated in the late 1960's when a group of Perendale sheep farmers had the desire to add value to their wool clip utilising a commission processor.
In 1983/84 the business grew to a level where the original shareholders decided to build their own spinning mill on its current site in Onekawa, Napier.
The Plant was taken over in 1989 by Design Spun Ltd and continued as a manufacturer of both hand & machine knitting yarns. Design Spun (1996) Ltd resulted from a management buyout of the majority of the plant & machinery in August 1996.
How We Work
Design Spun is a private label worsted mill. We are able to produce a variety of yarns which are suitable for hand knitting, crafts, textiles, weaving and upholstery applications.
We specialise in natural fibres and can work with fibre sourced by our team or use your fibre.
We spin in batch lots starting from 300 kilo’s and can produce a full range of yarns from finished undyed bulk yarns through to dyed, balled and labelled retail products.
The Skeinz Connection
Skeinz is our direct to public outlet for yarn. We are also the largest domestic supplier of undyed yarns to the independent yarn dyeing sector with our Naked Skeinz and Skeinz can supply stock yarns in bulk for quantities less than the 300 kilo batch minimum required by the DS mill. Skeinz also offers a clearance service for Design Spun clients looking to clear discontinued stocks or ranges through a single clearance outlet.
